Winter Navel: Redefining Agricultural Packaging with Vibrant Energy

The Winter Navel package design is created to promote the organic oranges produced on a farm in southern China. It includes two sizes of cardboard boxes, information cards, envelopes for orange peelers, and protection sheets for the oranges. The unique hand-drawn illustration on the package, created with watercolor and color pencils, showcases the elongated growth routine of Winter Navel oranges and the prosperous state of the farm.

The design team, led by Chao Xu, employed a combination of traditional and digital techniques to bring the design to life. The hand-drawn illustration was scanned into Photoshop for further modifications and combined with patterns and logos generated by a computer. This fusion of traditional and digital artistry results in a visually stunning package design that captures the essence of Winter Navel oranges.

The Winter Navel package design is available in two sizes: a 5kg pack measuring 360mm x 263mm x 141mm, and a gift pack measuring 260mm x 260mm x 80mm. The larger size is ideal for consumers looking to purchase a larger quantity of oranges, while the gift pack is perfect for special occasions or as a thoughtful present.

Throughout the design process, the team faced the challenge of effectively illustrating the significance of Winter Navel's elongated growth routine and the different forms of an orange tree during the four seasons. Rather than relying on simple computer drawings, they chose to use hand-drawn illustrations to convey the spirit of craftsmanship and authenticity. This decision adds a personal touch to the design and enhances the connection between the consumer and the product.

The Winter Navel package design not only showcases the beauty of the farmland scenery but also highlights the unique qualities of the organic oranges. The design team conducted extensive research on the growth process of Winter Navel oranges in different seasons and studied watercolor drawing techniques to produce vivid and lifelike images for the package design.

Recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity, the Winter Navel package design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2020.
